PENTAX 17916 10.0 Megapixel Optio E90 Digital Camera (Wine Red)

Customer Review :

So far so good..

I bought this camera because it was inexpensive but still had most of the features I was looking for in a camera. It uses 2 AA batteries, but they do last quite a while. Overall, the camera is great. It takes great pictures and has a lot of options for settings. My favorite is a panoramic feature which I have had a little difficulty with but haven't read about it. It also comes with a CD which has great photoshopping features. The only problem I have noticed so far is the video capture. It does not take a good video by any means, the voice is okay but when playing videos back, it's extremely delayed and broken. So if you are looking for a camera for mostly video purposes, this camera isn't for you! Other than that, it's totally worth the price!

Great choice

I got this for my daughters graduation gift. She wanted a $300 touch screen camera but it wasn't in the budget. She loves this one. The low light performance is good and it is great for the "extended arm self portrait." She took it on her senior trip (yes, I gave it to her early) and she took over 1000 photo's with it with better than average results. She also really likes the panoramic mode. Overall it's a good choice for a casual camera.

I ended up returning this camera

Very bad quality. Amazed that a brand name like Pentax would make and publish such a camera.
Poor picture quality, lots of noise in almost ALL indoor pictures.
Disapointed to the END.

Excellent

Pentax's P80 is a joy to own and use.

I've tested it thoroughly for 2 weeks. Its photos are technically pleasing 95% of the time. I never knew a camera could be this nice.

I love how the self timer works. It stays in effect until turned off, so I can do a long session of tripod mounted macros without having to use buttons and menus. There's even an option to have it remember the self timer setting when the camera is turned off and on. This will save huge amounts of time for night photography.

The interface was very easy to figure out. I was operating it with ease right away.

Video quality is excellent. 30 fps 1280x720 clips look incredible on an HDTV. The camera allows white balance and EV adjustments in video mode. The live histogram is accurate and useful to help capture the ideal image. Audio sounds clean and great too. The self timer function is available in video mode, so camera shake at the beginning of clips can be eliminated. Unlike QuickTime, the camera's AVI file format easily imports into Windows Movie Maker and Virtual Dub.

I use D-Range to control shadows and highlights. It works! I took a picture of new, bright white sneakers with black accents in noon sunlight and it turned out perfectly, even with contrast set to high. That kind of subject has far too much dynamic range for other cameras I've used.

I wish it had a black and white mode so I could simply get BW photos directly. There's an in-camera conversion option, but in the opinion of this reviewer it's a waste of battery life and storage space. Picasa does very good BW conversions of P80 photos. Other cameras have problems with challenging BW subjects like white and chrome cars on sunny days, but Pentax has it figured out. I'm always amazed to see wide, perfectly contained histograms in test photos I was sure would be failures. It's hard to make it clip shadows and highlights.

I didn't expect such useful results from a small, high resolution sensor. To my delight, the sensor delivers 12 good megapixels. Detail is excellent. The camera doesn't aggressively reduce noise and smear colors together.

It does lens correction. 28mm shots with strong barrel distortion are beautifully converted to scenes with straight lines and edges. It happens fast too.

I'm a very negative, fault finding person. It says a lot that this product exceeds my modest expectations.

After experimenting with its huge amounts of adjustment settings, I will use it in Auto ISO, high contrast, high sharpness, medium saturation, daylight white balance, D-Range shadows and highlights, and 7 megapixels. EV adjustments are rarely necessary thanks to D-Range processing. Leaving it at -0.3 appears to work well most of the time.

If I'm in a photographically ideal situation, I'll turn off D-Range and go to ISO 64 at 12 megapixels. (The lower limit with D-Range on is ISO 125.)

The tripod mount is centered, so the camera won't easily tip over with mini-tripods. I use a mini-tripod as a camera grip for more stability. It compensates for the P80's small size and light weight.

The camera has some purple fringing issues, so I can't give it 5 stars. They're easy to take care of in editing. I bought the thing mainly for black and white, so purple fringing doesn't matter much to me.

I tried its highest saturation setting and would not recommend it for normal, colorful scenery. None of the color channels blew out, but maximized blue skies and sunlit green plants looked too weird for my taste. High saturation would work better with drab subjects to bring out more color than the eye sees.

Customer Review :

Perfect for my purposes!

I bought this camera to photograph my family events and my art work. All aspects of this camera are terrific. It is a camera that offers more features and specs than many cameras at twice the price. Its best feature, however, is its portability! No more lugging large SLR bodies, or larger point-and-shoots. I can carry this around in my pocket! Another remarkable features is the battery life. I can go weeks without a charge.

If you are looking for SLR quality photos, then buy SLR cameras. If you are looking for a portable point-and-shoot with great features and very high quality photos, then buy this camera. You won't regret it.

Loved the look and form factor; the images, not so much

Wow, I wanted to love this camera ... the aesthetics/design got me as soon as I saw the first images released back in January. I have enough old Pentaxes (including an Auto 110 Super) to really appreciate the retro look, styling and old-style logo. The form factor was actually quite nice, with a good balance, small but really nice right-hand grip, and a pleasant grippy texture. It was a bit light (plasticky) for its size.
But the picture-taking experience -- slow, slow, slow, at least by 2010 standards. I think the 2004 PowerShot I have is faster. Flash photos were terribly slow because of the preflash, which seemed to add an extra second and a half to the process. And images were soft overall, but softer as you zoom anywhere near the telephoto end. Noise and speckling was apparent at nearly all ISO speeds. As far as positives about image quality, in bright daylight, at 80 ISO (the sensor's base speed), images weren't bad and the lens did show good flare resistance.
Videos were technically HD, but at quality poor enough that it didn't seem to be worth the higher spec. Zoom in video mode is only available as digital zoom, which degrades image quality immediately.
Sliding battery cover was very fragile and seemed prone to become misaligned and I was very, very careful with it; I would always worry about its durability.
I didn't get to check out any of the really fancy features like pet face recognition. Human face recognition seemed to work reasonably well, though the photos weren't necessarily better exposed because of it. In fact, basic flash photos/snapshots seemed washed out, with very muted colors.
All in all, a very big disappointment. I knew it had fairly average camera specs (fairly run-of-the mill point-and-shoot specs for a 2010 p&s) with a cool design, but the photo quality was such a step backward from anything else I'm using today that I had to return it.

Portability

I bought this because I had given my 8mp SE phone to my mom (along with my Sony camera). I realized that my Sony was bulky to carry around and did not prove as effective as when I was a student (took it to games and stuff). So, this is my continuing saga where I research on really good brands that most of my 'desi' friends aren't even aware of. They say "Pentax??!! What the heck is that? Why didn't you buy a Canon or a Sony?" The picture quality, face recognition and the speed are very nice. This is basically what you'd NEED but may not WANT. There are a lot of built-in profiles that are very easy to set the camera to in an instant. The interface is okay but I think I personally might want some more (I see everything as computers ...)
Anyway, awesome buy. And, I did have a 20 bucks manufacturer's discount.

Pretty good little camera

Overall, I find this a pretty good little digital point and shoot, and a good replacement for our earlier model of Pentax Optio. For indoor shooting, I am impressed at the depth achieved by the flash -- much better than our earlier model. In fact, I really wasn't expecting such good results. If I were to fault the camera at all, I would say that the colors in the photos are vibrant -- perhaps a bit more vibrant than in actuality. Still, that is a minor problem -- if a problem at all -- for a digital camera in such a portable package.

Good vacation camera

I have been using a Pentax camera, mostly on vacations, for several year and am pleased with it. I wanted a camera with a wide angle lense so I could take group pictures and landscapes without leaving out part of the scene I wanted.

After I received the Pentax P80 and started taking test pictures to see how it works, I found that the advertising about "wide angle" lense was misleading. What the camera does is stitch two or three pictures together to make one wide picture. That is hardly a wide angle lense. I already had a Canon camera that allows me to take two pictures and then stitch them together with the software Cannon provided. The Canon is a much larger camera and it is still difficult to take two pictures that can match each other enough to stitch them together. The Pentax is very small (which I like) but it is almost impossible to take two or three pictures that match enough to stitch together.

I should have known better to think I could get a wide angle lense on a camera that only cost $130. But the darn thing is so easy to carry around, and takes such good pictures, that I won't leave home without it (and my cell phone, of course).

Pass...

I really wanted to like this camera. It's very nice externally, but the pictures were barely decent. We tried all the settings, customized the settings, tried different lighting but most of them came out grainy. I was excited about the HD video recording capability as we have a new baby. It looked like she was covered with ants! Also, the rechargeable battery drained pretty quickly after a few snaps and turning it off and on a couple of times. I ended up returning it.

Grainy and blurry

After my Panasonic FS7 took a tumble (boy was it fragile...don't dare drop it while it's on), I decided to replace it with the P80. I was terribly disappointed in the quality of photos. Granted, I realize that all digital point and shoots will have less than optimal quality in low light, but this was plain HORRIBLE. Everything was orangish and grainy. Also, maybe the autofocus and autoiso features apparently did not work properly, because 80% of the photos were a blur. I had to return this piece of crap. I decided to go back to Panasonic and got the ZR1. Pentax had one chance to impress and failed.

Questions & Answers
Question : Has anyone used the Rokinon telephoto lenses with a Pentax Digital Camera?
I saw 2 different lenses on Overstock.com: Rokinon 650-1300mm for $253 and the Rokinon 500mm for $107. Are they worth the money?

Answer:
They are "worth the money" since they are very inexpensive. Don't expect great quality, though. If you plan to use them only occasionally, and don't expect excellent image quality, they will work well enough.Good luck and have fun!Greg

Question : Anyone used the Pentax 8.0 mega digital camera?
I'm thinking about purchasing a Pentax 8.0 mega pentax digital camera model M50. Has anyone tired this camera and how are the results? I have 2 old pentax cameras one is a 35mm and the other a 3.5 pixel digital, and have had great results with both. I worry about the newer one M50 because it comes with a special rechargeable battery instead of the normal AA batteries. Any one have an input? Thanks in advance.

Answer:
i have this one, and love it http://www.ezelectronixshop.authsafe.com/product_info.php?products_id=14350Check it out, it's pretty cool...

Question : Does anyone know anything about a Pentax Digital Camera?
Is it a descent camera or would I be wasting my money on a crappy camera? It is a Pentax E10. I dont know much about digital cameras so I would appreciate any help! Even if it is just an opinon!

Answer:
Comcast Shopping does not rate this camera very highly. The users seem to really like the Pentac M10, which does not cost too much more than the E10.I admit that there are only 4 reviews for the M10 and 3 for the E10, but the users had some really nasty things to say about the E10.

Question : My Pentax M10 digital camera uploads 8 files to my computer everytime I upload photos?
But they are not photos. I don't know what these files are. They are between 6-8MB each. Could they be data pertaining to the photos?

Answer:
No. It would be best to format your card right now to get rid of all traces of them.

Question : Is there a way on a Pentax digital camera to pause during a video?
It's a Pentax optio E40How?

Answer:
I have a Pentax optio t 10 , and i dont believe my camera can pause.

Question : Does anyone know if some one made a conversion kit for a Pentax film SLR to a digital camera?
I hate to abandon my my Pentax film camera its a Super program SLR, I wandered if a replacement CCD back kit to convert it to the digital age.

Answer:
No. Leica tried that about four years ago. The back cost more than a DSLR camera, so after a couple of years, Leica dropped that product.Just buy a good Pentax DSLR and use the lenses you have on both. I still have 3, 35 mm SLR's which I use from time to time.

Question : digital camera pentax optio m30 battery doesn't work?
my dad brought a m30 pentax camera from amsterdam airport.it worked well for 3-4 week but the when ever we tried to charge the battery ,it wouldn't work.now we don't know weather there is a problem in battery or the charger.also i would like to know about its coustmer care center in india

Answer:
there is an old saying "don't buy anything from the airport"

Question : Problem with my Pentax digital camera. New batteries keep saying batteries depleted?
My screen on my Pentax digital camera keeps saying batteries depleted even though I have new batteries in the camera. Help

Answer:
I dont know which model you have from Pentax but my model Optio 30 also has the same trouble. My experience is if you have a pair of new alkalines it will work otherwise not at all. Rechargable batteries should do better but I never tried them. I tried CRV3 once, it is good but of a little bit more initial cost. It will do better if you follow some strategies to avoid battery consumption such as turning off the LCD screen, less use of zooming and flash, etc. Otherwise, Pentax is better in performance than many cameras and my model is very good for shooting practise.

Question : Does the camera manufacturer PENTAX make good quality digital cameras?
Does the camera manufacturer PENTAX make good quality digital cameras compared to Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Casio etc?

Answer:
Pentax is a camera/imaging company first, just like Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Leica. Sony, Panasonic and Casio are consumer electronic companies and make cameras along with other items. Pentax quality is right there with the best of them and far better than companies like Casio. Sony and Panasonic do make good cameras, especially now that Sony has taken over the Konika Minolta camera business. Pentax is definitely a good, solid choice.

Question : Pentax ist digital camera not working with fresh batteries?
My Pentax ist appeared to be out of batteries, so I replaced them, but it is still displaying the low battery icon and not turning on. I've had this happen before with cheap batteries that don't have enough power to run the camera, but I just put in Energizer lithium batteries which can usually power it for a few weeks, or even months depending on how many pictures I take. I'm going on a trip in a few days, and would really like to have a working camera with me, any help is appreciated :)

Answer:
I have an *ist Ds model, and it never really liked lithium's either. Probably should look in the manual and see if lithium's are even recommended, but really my cam works best with plain old energizers, and also rechargeable crv-3 batteries. Oh and of course pull them out, and make sure you have them installed correctly (duh). Good luck :)
